It’s Blade Runner on MDMA! Exactly what we needed from Netflix...
This 10 episode series offers its audiences gripping combat scenes, a focussed storyline and soft core porn to immerse oneself in this alternate reality.
From the opening title sequence you just know you’re in for a treat because the sheer quality that’s offered, it almost blows you away. Set in the distant future (I’m talking 200-300 years here), we encounter a few intriguing characters with the main being Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman), a former soldier gone rogue and Kristin Ortega (Martha Higareda), our strong willed and sexy heroin. Ultimately, Kovacs is “pulled from ice” to be reborn to solve a murder of the elites (Meths) within this realm. Now, bare with me, I’m throwing a few words in here that you may not understand however it’ll become clear as day when you start watching the series.
The characters are well portrayed by some of our actors, with Poe (Chris Connor) being particularly endearing throughout our adventure and you almost become protective of him by the end. Unfortunately, there are scenes and moments where the acting was off, whether it’d be tone of voice or facial expressions but you’ll take it for what it is.
Cinematography was, well...pretty, freakin’ amazing! The CGI, costume designs were all there and the rumour going around is that it wasn’t cheap and we can tell!
An observation from the series was my indifference to some of the very advanced technologies that appeared (unimaginable if we were watching this in the 90s), for example contactless payments for purchasing goods and insanely advanced medical procedures with the gastronomical bills *cough, cough, America*
Again, I would just like to make it clear that this is a genre I particularly enjoy and I can see it’s to taste, but with that said, overall it’s well exciting, would recommend a watch!
7/10
